Theater Doubles Its Share of Korea's Box Office Chart as Concert Season Peaks

Theater expanded its footprint on Korea’s performance box-office chart in the 33rd week of 2026, rising to 10% of the weekly top 50 from 4% the week before — a six-percentage-point gain that stands out in a chart otherwise dominated by a packed summer concert calendar. The shift came alongside a broader loosening at the top: the combined share of the leading genres eased from 52% to 48%, according to KOPIS, the national performing arts box-office tracker operated by the Korea Arts Management Service.
A Six-Point Jump for the Smallest Major Genre
Theater’s move from 4% to 10% translates to five productions in the week’s 50-title ranking, up from a marginal presence a week earlier. In a market where popular music (24 titles) and musicals (16 titles) together account for four of every five chart positions, a doubling-plus of theater’s share is the week’s most notable structural change, even if none of the five plays cracked the top 10.
The rest of the chart’s genre mix underlines how narrow the field remains: Western classical music placed two titles, while dance, multidisciplinary work, and circus/magic each placed one.
Global Acts Anchor the Top Ten
The week’s summit belonged to touring pop. Maroon 5’s Korea concert in Gyeonggi Province took first place, followed by the musical Dracula in Seoul at second. K-pop touring filled out much of the remaining top tier: &TEAM’s “BLAZE THE WAY” Seoul encore ranked third, TAEMIN’s “LiMiNaL” world tour stop in Seoul fourth, and Young Tak’s “TAK SHOW5” solo concert fifth.
Incheon’s XMF (Xnterstellar Music Festival) placed sixth, with Kim Yong-bin’s “Serenade” concert seventh and QWER’s “ROCKATION: ROCKET LAUNCH!!” tour eighth. Musicals held the final two slots — Frozen at ninth and Gwanghwamun Sonata at tenth — giving the genre three of the top ten alongside seven popular-music entries.
Turnover Ran High Beneath the Surface
Thirty-one of the 50 ranked productions were new entries this week, an unusually high churn rate that reflects the concert-heavy season: the Maroon 5 date, the &TEAM Seoul encore, and TAEMIN’s Seoul shows all debuted directly into the top five. Among returning titles, movement skewed slightly negative — eight productions climbed the ranking while eleven fell.
Taken together, the week reads as a market in mid-rotation: international and domestic pop acts are cycling through Korea’s largest venues and claiming the top of the chart on arrival, while theater quietly rebuilds its presence in the lower half. Whether the genre holds that expanded 10% share once the summer touring wave recedes will be the number to check in the coming weeks’ KOPIS data.
