Korean Box Office Slips 7% in Week 33 as 'The Odyssey' Tightens Its Grip on First Place

South Korea’s box office cooled in the 33rd week of 2026, with total weekly ticket revenue falling 7.0% from the prior week even as The Odyssey held a commanding lead at the top of the chart. The decline came alongside a modest loosening of the market’s extreme top-heaviness: the top three films’ share of weekly revenue eased to 88.5% from 91.1% a week earlier, according to data from the Korean Film Council’s integrated ticketing system (KOBIS).
A Two-Film Race at the Top
The Odyssey remained the week’s dominant title by a wide margin, grossing ₩29.41 billion from 2,667,695 admissions and pushing its cumulative audience to 4,542,453. That weekly haul was more than double that of second-place Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which took in ₩14.0 billion from 1,363,012 admissions.
The cumulative figures tell a different story about the two films’ trajectories. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has now drawn 7,279,368 total admissions in Korea — well ahead of The Odyssey’s running total — but its weekly audience is now roughly half the newer release’s, suggesting the superhero title is deep into the back end of its run while The Odyssey is still absorbing the bulk of current demand.
Third place went to Detective Conan: The Fallen Angel of the Highway, the latest entry in the long-running Japanese animation franchise, which earned ₩2.13 billion from 217,199 admissions in what appears to be an early stage of its release, with cumulative admissions at 226,027.
Two Newcomers Enter Mid-Chart
The week brought two fresh entries to the top ten. The Korean comedy sequel Okay Madam 2 debuted in fifth place with ₩1.78 billion in revenue and 192,184 admissions, landing just behind the children’s animation Heartsping: The Legend of the Whale Jewel, which held fourth with ₩1.87 billion. Further down, PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie opened in seventh with ₩424.7 million from 43,879 admissions.
Beyond the new arrivals, movement across the chart skewed negative: two titles climbed in the rankings while five fell, consistent with a week in which overall spending contracted.
Long Runners and the Lower Half
Hope continued its extended run in sixth place, adding 81,690 admissions for a cumulative audience of 4,475,556 — a total that now rivals The Odyssey’s, accumulated over a far longer window. The bottom of the chart was rounded out by What Should We Have Done? in eighth (₩194.2 million), Minions & Monsters in ninth with a cumulative audience of 772,750, and David in tenth, which has drawn 298,694 admissions to date.
Reading the Concentration Numbers
The drop in top-three revenue concentration from 91.1% to 88.5% is small in absolute terms, but it marks a slight redistribution of spending toward the middle of the chart — driven largely by Okay Madam 2’s debut and the steady family-audience business of Heartsping. Even so, a market where fewer than nine of every ten won still flow to just three titles remains unusually concentrated, and the 7.0% weekly revenue decline indicates the mid-August holdovers are not yet generating enough breadth to offset the gradual cooldown of the summer’s biggest releases.
