Korean Box Office Falls 32.6% in Week 35 as The Odyssey Towers Over a Thinning Market
South Korea’s box office cooled sharply in the last week of August, with total weekly ticket revenue falling 32.6 percent from the previous week even as The Odyssey held its commanding position at the top of the chart. The pullback came despite three fresh titles entering the top ten, none of which opened strongly enough to offset the fading momentum of the summer’s biggest releases.
One Film, Two-Thirds of the Money
The Odyssey remained the clearest story of the week. The film took in 19.87 billion won from 1,755,595 admissions, pushing its cumulative audience to 8,864,932 — within reach of the nine-million mark. Within the top ten, that single title accounted for roughly 68 percent of combined revenue, and its weekly gross was more than four and a half times that of the runner-up.
That runner-up, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, earned 4.39 billion won from 420,800 admissions. Its weekly numbers now trail far behind, but the cumulative picture is much closer: at 8,548,398 total admissions, the superhero sequel sits only about 316,000 viewers behind The Odyssey — a race for the summer’s overall crown that the weekly chart no longer captures.
Notably, the concentration of revenue among the top three films actually eased, from 87.4 percent to 84.9 percent. The dip reflects less a broadening market than a shrinking one: the leaders lost altitude faster than the midtable gained it.
Newcomers Arrive Softly
Three titles debuted in the top ten, and together they grossed about 3.01 billion won — less than Spider-Man: Brand New Day managed on its own in week five of the chart battle.
The strongest debut, Gyeongju Travelogue, opened at third place with 1.82 billion won from 187,905 admissions. The Last Day on Oak Street followed at fourth with 1.07 billion won and 106,894 admissions. Dog Star: The Last Hope barely cleared the chart’s threshold, entering at tenth with 119.7 million won from 11,718 admissions — all of them first-week viewers.
Openings of this scale can build if word of mouth carries them, but none arrived with the footprint of a title capable of re-energizing overall admissions on its own.
A Chart Drifting Downward
Movement elsewhere on the chart pointed the same direction: only one film climbed in the rankings while four slid. Insidious: They Came Through held fifth with 555.2 million won, and the animated family title Heartsping: Legend of the Whale Jewel added 478.8 million won, lifting its long run to 838,709 cumulative admissions. Detective Conan: The Fallen Angel of the Highway and Okay Madam 2 filled out the middle of the table with 468.8 million and 274.1 million won respectively.
At ninth, Hope illustrated the long tail of the season — a weekly take of just 163.2 million won against a cumulative audience of 4,535,081, a film now deep into the final stretch of its run.
The Question for September
The week’s numbers frame a familiar late-summer transition: the holiday-season tentpoles are exhausting their audiences faster than new releases are replacing them. With The Odyssey approaching nine million admissions and its weekly hauls inevitably set to compress, the market’s near-term direction depends on whether any of the September slate can open at a scale the current newcomers did not. Until then, a third of the market’s weekly revenue has simply gone missing — and one film is carrying most of what remains.
